Until now, strategies for rendering functionally safe telltales in digital instrument clusters have typically relied on a Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) to validate correct display after the fact. This approach constrains telltale functionality because of the inherent simplicity and limited capabilities of RTOS-based implementations. As a result, telltales in today’s high-tech, widescreen digital instrument clusters often do little more than replicate functionality first introduced in vehicles nearly 100 years ago. This talk presents a safe-rendering approach—rather than a validation-only model—that uses a high-level operating system, Linux, to bring safe telltale functionality into the 21st century.
